If you lose connectivity while surfing the web in Firefox, it may decide, automatically, to “work offline.” If you don’t want Firefox to choose to do that automatically, the setting can be turned off.
NOTE: This procedure works in Firefox 3.6 and above in Windows and Linux.
To access the preferences for Firefox, type “about:config” (without the quotes) in the address bar and press Enter.
If you see the message telling you that what you are about to do might void your warranty, click the I’ll be careful, I promise! button to continue.
NOTE: If you don’t want to see this warning every time you access the Firefox preferences, select the Show this warning next time check box so there is no check mark in the box. To turn on the warranty warning again, see our post, Bring Back the Firefox about:config Warning Message.
Create a new preference that allows for a true or a false value by right-clicking on any preference in the list and selecting New | Boolean from the popup menu.
The New boolean value dialog box displays. Enter the following name in the Enter the preference name edit box and click OK.
If you are using Firefox in a Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, the Enter boolean value dialog box displays. Select false and click OK.
If you are using Windows, you must change the Value of the new preference to false either by double-clicking on the preference or by right-clicking on the preference and selecting Toggle from the popup menu.
To work offline automatically again, set the new preference to true. If you want to remove the preference completely, right-click again on the preference and select Reset from the popup menu.
NOTE: We found that, in Windows, we had to set the Value of the preference back to true so the Status read user set before we could select the Reset option.
The next time you restart Firefox, the preference will be gone. You can use this method to remove any new preferences you added to Firefox.
